The High 5 Habit
Boom, there it is! A high-five to yourself in the bathroom mirror first thing in the morning.
I love the book by Mel Robbins, The High 5 Habit.
Mel describes the high-five habit and the science behind it. Giving yourself a high five in the mirror each morning is simple, free, easy, quick, and so impactful! I wish I had known this when I was five years old, but I know it now, and I want you to experience the benefits, too.
The key steps to practicing the High 5 Habit:
1. Upon waking up, put your feet on the floor, walk to the bathroom mirror, and gaze at yourself.
2. Say something kind about yourself that you can believe in: “You’ve got this day!” “You are beautiful.” “Lori, the presentation today is amazing.”
3. Then, hold your hand up and give yourself a high five in the mirror. Actually, hit the mirror.
The physical high-five gesture combined with positive self-talk while looking at your reflection boosts your confidence and motivation and creates a positive mindset for the day ahead.
Researchers showed that out of 3 groups of children studied, the group that received a high five before an assignment outperformed the group that received verbal praise.
Let’s look at some of the science behind the High 5 Habit:
Dopamine Release:
When you give a high five, your brain releases Dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. This natural chemical boost enhances your mood, making you feel happier and more motivated.
Reduction of Cortisol levels:
Engaging in positive physical interactions, like a high five, can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone. Lower cortisol means reduced stress and anxiety, helping you maintain a calm and focused mind.
Activate the Mirror Neuron System:
High fives activate the mirror neuron system in our brains, which is responsible for understanding and mimicking the actions of others. This activation fosters empathy, connection, and social bonding, making us feel more connected to those around us.
Positive Self-Affirmation:
When you give yourself a high five in the mirror, it serves as a form of positive self-affirmation. This simple act can reinforce your self-worth, boost your confidence, and remind you that you’re capable and deserving of success.
Spread the Positivity:
High-five your colleagues, friends, and family members. This simple act can uplift their spirits, foster a positive environment, and strengthen relationships.
The High Five Habit is a powerful tool that harnesses the science of positivity and human connection. Each high five is a step towards a happier, more fulfilled life.
